Website speed matters: the silent killer of sales, SEO and reputation

At ReVisual we have optimised dozens of websites, from simple company sites to online stores with thousands of products. These are real lessons from practice, not theory from the internet.

"We have a beautiful website, so why doesn't it bring results?" We hear this question at ReVisual regularly. In many cases the answer is uncomfortably simple: the website is slow. Not by minutes. Sometimes by just two seconds. But that is enough to lose a customer, your position on Google and trust in your brand.

Numbers that should worry you

Website speed is not a technical detail for developers. It is a direct business metric. Look at the numbers that measurably affect your business every day.

53% of mobile visitors leave if a website doesn't load within 3 seconds

7% more conversions for every second of faster loading

90% higher chance of leaving with a 5 s load time vs. 1 s

What this means in practice: if 1,000 people visit your website every month and it takes 4 seconds to load, you are losing more than 500 potential customers every month, without knowing it.

Why website speed is crucial for your business

You can't repeat a first impression

Loading speed is a customer's first interaction with your brand, before they see your design, content or offer. If they wait too long, they leave. And they usually don't come back. A slow website signals a lack of professionalism, even if its content is excellent.

The impact on SEO and Google rankings

Google evaluates loading speed as part of Core Web Vitals, a set of metrics that directly affect your page's position in search. A slow website means lower rankings, less organic traffic and fewer customers. Optimising website speed is therefore also part of an SEO strategy.

Speed directly affects conversions

Every second of loading has a measurable impact on sales. Amazon calculated that 100 ms of delay costs it 1% of annual revenue. For small and medium-sized businesses the relationship is even more sensitive: customers have no reason to wait when a competitor's site loads a second faster.

A story from practice, ReVisual

Natural cosmetics: from 6 seconds to 1.2 seconds

A client running a natural cosmetics brand came to us asking why their website wasn't generating sales despite professional design and advertising spend. The landing page was overloaded with uncompressed images and a heavy template. The site took more than 6 seconds to load. Over 75% of visitors left within 3 seconds.

After optimisation (compressing images, removing unnecessary scripts, caching and migrating to high-performance hosting), we cut the loading time to 1.2 seconds. The results came within a few weeks.

How to measure your website's speed

Before you start optimising anything, you need to know where you stand. These three tools are free and give you concrete data and recommendations.

Google PageSpeed Insights

Watch the score

A PageSpeed score below 50 is critical, 50 to 89 is average and 90+ is good. Most Slovak company websites score below 60, and their owners don't know it.

6 proven ways to speed up your website

These are not generic tips from the internet; they are concrete steps we implement in every ReVisual project, and they bring measurable results.

  • 1

    Optimise images in WebP format

Images are the most common cause of a slow website. Compress them before uploading (TinyPNG, Squoosh) and convert them to WebP, which is 25 to 35% smaller than JPEG at the same quality. Enable lazy loading so that images load only as the user scrolls.
  • 2

    Minimise JavaScript and CSS

Unnecessary code slows down every page load. Remove unused scripts and styles and minify HTML/CSS/JS (removing whitespace and comments). On WordPress, plugins such as Autoptimize, Asset CleanUp or WP Rocket help.
  • 3

    Set up caching and compression

Caching stores files locally, so the website loads faster on repeat visits. Enable Brotli or Gzip compression on the server; it reduces the size of transferred data by 60 to 80%. WordPress options: WP Super Cache, LiteSpeed Cache.
  • 4

    Reduce plugins and external scripts

Every plugin adds code and HTTP requests. Audit your active plugins regularly and remove the ones you don't need. Be careful with live chats, pop-up systems and social widgets: each of them loads external scripts.
  • 5

    Choose high-performance hosting

Cheap shared hosting at €2 a month is the most common, and in the long run the most expensive, mistake. Invest in a VPS or hosting optimised for WordPress with support for HTTP/2, Brotli compression and ideally a CDN (content delivery network). The difference in speed is radical.
  • 6

Go for a light, clean design

Visually rich templates with dozens of animations and effects can look impressive, but at the cost of performance. A simple, clean custom design is always faster than an over-tuned template. And usually more beautiful too.

Website speed as a competitive advantage

If your competitors offer a similar service or product, the speed of your website can decide who wins. A slow page undermines trust before the customer even sees your offer.

At ReVisual we build every website to be not only beautiful and strategically designed but also technically fast from the ground up, not patched later. Speed is not a bonus. It is the foundation.

Frequently asked questions about website speed

How much does website speed optimisation cost?

It depends on the current state of the website and the scope of the work. Basic optimisation of an existing website costs €200 to €800. A complete technical overhaul including migration to high-performance hosting and a redesign of critical pages can reach €1,500 to €3,000. The investment usually pays for itself within the first months through a higher conversion rate and cheaper advertising.

Can I optimise my website's speed myself?

Anyone can handle basic steps such as compressing images or installing a caching plugin. More advanced optimisation (minimising code, configuring the server correctly or Core Web Vitals) requires technical knowledge. If you are not sure, talk to us for free.

Will website speed affect my Google Ads budget?

Yes, significantly. Google also evaluates page speed for paid ads: a slow landing page gets a lower Quality Score, which increases the cost per click (CPC). A faster website means cheaper ads, a higher conversion rate and a multiplied return on investment.

How long does website speed optimisation take?

Basic optimisation of an existing WordPress website takes 3 to 7 working days. A comprehensive technical overhaul with migration and code changes takes 2 to 4 weeks. Results in the PageSpeed score are visible immediately; the impact on SEO rankings and conversions shows within 4 to 8 weeks.

A slow website is not a technical problem; it is a business problem. Every extra second of loading costs you customers, money and positions on Google.
